How SRC Group is a Sustainable Construction Company

Building a More Sustainable Construction Industry

At SRC Group, sustainability is weaved into all of our services and we pride ourselves on being a sustainable construction company. From recycling demolition waste to creating lower-carbon solutions, we're committed to conserving natural resources and offering greener alternatives to our customers.

This commitment has been recognised through national awards and independently-verified certifications, but more importantly, it's reflected in our day-to-day operations.

Our Circular Economy As A Sustainable Construction Company

The construction industry produces 62% of the UK’s waste and 32% of all landfill contributions. However, at SRC our circular economy means that we do things a little differently.

Materials that have been recovered during our demolition and site clearance projects are transported to our state-of-the-art recycling facilities, where they're carefully processed and tested. Currently, 89% of these materials are processed to the point of reuse, with the remaining 11% contributing to restoration schemes. That's just part of how we strive to be a sustainable construction company.

SRC Group

The materials which can be repurposed are integrated into a wide range of products, including:

Our recycled aggregates adhere to the highest quality standard including WRAP protocols and the Highways 600 series; providing a high-quality alternative for a wide range of construction applications.

Manufactured using recycled aggregate materials, our award-winning ECO-BLOC® blocks provide a practical solution for retaining walls, storage bays and temporary structures.

Our STRC low-carbon concrete range helps to reduce embodied carbon whilst also delivering the high-quality performance required for both commercial and domestic applications.

By recovering valuable resources rather than relying solely on primary materials, we're reducing the amount of construction waste that’s sent to landfill and helping to create a more sustainable supply chain. Since 2020 we’ve already diverted over 6 million tonnes of waste away from landfill; a number that is growing rapidly.

Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

Zero CO₂e at the Point of Production

SRC Group's recycled aggregates, sands, sub-base, clay, topsoil and subsoil have recently received Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) certification, verifying net zero CO₂e at the point of production and marking another important milestone in our sustainability journey. Using recycled materials over virgin alternatives has helped us to save approximately 30 million kg of CO₂e since 2020; the equivalent of around 16.7 million miles of HGV travel or roughly 671 times around the earth at the equator. An EPD not only further demonstrates our dedication to providing recycled alternatives within the construction sector, it also offers our customers with independently-verified information; offering a much greater insight into the environmental benefits of our recycled materials.

Our Recycling Facilities

With recycling facilities located in seven key locations across the South East, we are able to recover and process materials that are close to where they're generated. Each year we supply more than 1.2 million tonnes of recycled products back into the construction industry; a figure that continues to grow as our network expands. These facilities are a key part of us being a sustainable construction company and our commitment to keeping valuable resources in use for longer.

Sustainable Construction Company FAQs

An EPD is a formal document which is based on the internationally-recognised standards ISO 14025 and EN 15804. The report evaluates a product's environmental performance across its life cycle; giving a measurable dataset to work from.

This refers to the specific figure reported in our EPD, which outlines a Global Warming Potential of 0.00 kg CO₂e for the A1 to A3 stages: raw material supply, transport and manufacturing. This is a product-stage figure, not a claim about the whole lifecycle of a project.

Right now, it's our recycled aggregates, sands, sub-base, clay, topsoil and subsoil. ECO-BLOC® and our Low-Carbon Ready Mixed Concrete range aren't included, even though they're made from the same recycled materials that are. We're looking at whether that can change in the future.

Yes, for most applications. Our recycled aggregates are tested against recognised standards, including WRAP protocols and the Highways 600 series, so they hold up to the same requirements as virgin material in a wide range of projects.
