How does a circular economy improve sustainability in construction?

As a sector, we are all facing environmental challenges and rapid natural resource depletion. As a result, the construction industry is seeing significant changes, with many more to come.

Central to this shift is the need for our sector as a whole to fully embrace a circular economy; a model which emphasises resource efficiency and reduces waste.

At SRC Group, we are at the forefront of this movement, integrating circular economy principles into every area of our operations to ensure sustainability in construction.

Circular economy & sustainability in construction

Traditionally, construction has followed a simple model: extract resources, build, and dispose. This approach has led to substantial waste being generated before ending up in landfills, leading to environmental degradation. In contrast, the circular economy promotes a regenerative system where materials are reused, recycled, and repurposed; minimising waste and conserving natural resources.

At SRC Group, our commitment to the circular economy is shown through our service offering, which includes sustainable waste management via recycled material production as well as innovative eco-friendly construction solutions.

We have a reuse rate of 89% for recovered materials, reintegrated into construction supply chains, displacing the need for virgin resources. By reimagining waste as a valuable resource, we are committed to redefining sustainability in construction and contributing to a greener future for the next generation and beyond.

SRC Group’s circular economy in action

1. Demolition and material recovery

Our demolition services are designed with sustainability at their core. We aim to recycle 100% of waste materials, including concrete, hardcore, wood, and metal. By employing cutting-edge machinery and environmentally responsible practices at our state-of-the-art recycling centres, we ensure that demolition waste is safely and reliably cleared, processed, and repurposed for future use.

2. Production of recycled aggregates

Post-demolition, all materials recovered are processed and turned into our high-quality recycled aggregates. These aggregates undergo rigorous in-house testing to meet WRAP protocols and British Standards, ensuring that they are suitable for a wide range of construction applications; both domestic and commercial.

3. ECO-BLOC® Blocks

Our ECO-BLOC® range is a huge part of our commitment to sustainable construction and only available from SRC Group. These strong and durable concrete blocks are created from a unique blend of cement, recycled fine aggregates, and recycled coarse aggregates.

They are versatile, suitable for load-bearing walls, cavity walls, as well as block and beam flooring, offering not only structural security, but also long-term environmental benefits.

4. Low-Carbon ready-mixed concrete

To further reduce the carbon footprint of construction projects, SRC Readymix supplies five categories of low-carbon ready-mixed concrete, including cement-free mixes. These products are designed to meet the diverse needs of our clients whilst aligning with our sustainability goals.

5. SRC Build

SRC Build is our final component within the circular economy loop. By delivering construction services ourselves, we’re not just processing recycled materials, we’re able to use them in new builds and refurbishments. It means that during every stage of the process, from demolition and recycling right through to construction, we can put circular economy principles into practice on-site, every day.

The circular economy in construction

Reducing environmental impact

Every year, SRC Group prevents millions of tonnes of waste from ending up in landfill, cutting pollution, preserving natural resources, and lowering carbon emissions in the process. It’s all part of our mission to reduce the environmental footprint of construction.

In 2024, we restored 20 acres of arable land. Using the final, unusable materials that couldn’t be recycled into construction, we regenerated old quarry workings, giving the land a new lease of life for agriculture instead of sending that material to landfill.

Cost advantages

Using recycled materials often results in unexpected cost savings. Recycled aggregates, for instance, can be more affordable than their virgin counterparts, offering financial benefits without compromising on quality.

Regulatory compliance and improved reputation

Adhering to circular economy principles isn’t just good for the planet, it also helps to meet growing sustainability rules and shows clients that you’re serious about doing things the right way. It’s a great way to build trust and stand out from the competition.

With customer demand for recycled materials up 10% year-on-year, our clients are already looking for innovative new solutions that are friendlier to the environment.

And as we move closer to achieving net zero, sustainability will become an even bigger priority for everyone in the industry; from contractors and developers to clients and end users. Being ahead of the curve now means fewer headaches later, and more opportunities to win work with like-minded partners.

SRC Group’s vision for a sustainable future

We take sustainability seriously and back it up with real action. Our team is always looking for smarter ways to cut down waste and invest in greener tech. It’s not just about ticking boxes; we want to lead the way and keep raising the bar across everything that we do.

Moving towards a circular economy isn’t just a nice idea, it’s something the whole construction industry needs to get behind. It helps the planet and keeps projects in line with changing government rulings. At SRC Group, we’re already doing the work and we’re helping our clients to become greener during the process.
