The 4 main concepts of the circular economy in construction

At SRC Group, we’ve always believed that sustainability isn’t just a goal, it’s a responsibility that we all share. In the construction industry, the traditional ‘take, make, dispose’ approach is no longer sustainable long-term, for us as an industry or the climate.

Instead, the circular economy (which we employ here at SRC Group), aims to keep resources regenerating for as long as possible; extracting the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recovering and reusing products and materials until the end of their life.

But what does that actually look like in practice? Let’s break down the four key concepts of the circular economy and how SRC Group is putting them into action every day.

Planning waste and pollution

One of the core principles of the circular economy is to prevent waste and pollution before they’re even created. In the last three years, SRC Group has diverted 30 million tonnes of waste away from landfill by processing construction and demolition waste at our fully-licensed recycling centres.

Rather than letting valuable materials go to waste, we turn them into usable products; such as our ECO-BLOC® blocks.

By prioritising recycling and reuse within the initial planning stage, we’re helping our clients to reduce their waste footprint whilst contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable construction industry overall.

This means thinking differently right from the initial stages of planning and design:

  • Modular design: Buildings and infrastructure designed with components that can be disassembled, reused, or repurposed in the future.
  • Material choices: Selecting durable, recyclable, and low-impact materials to minimise environmental harm.
  • Efficient processes: Reducing offcuts and excess materials on-site by improving planning in the early stages of development.

Keeping products and materials in use

A circular economy keeps resources in use, rather than sending them straight to landfill. This includes recovering bricks, steel, concrete and aggregates from demolition projects. We also work closely with clients and project managers to extend the lifespan of materials through refurbishment and maintenance.

Further down the supply chain, SRC Group plays a key role in by offering a wide range of recycled aggregates. We process waste through advanced screening, crushing, and washing systems to ensure our recycled products meet industry standards and specifications. What’s more, since 2023 our low-carbon concrete mixes have already saved 1,750 tonnes of CO₂.

By using recycled aggregates, construction projects can reduce their reliance on virgin materials, lower costs, and conserve natural resources, all whilst meeting sustainability targets.

Regenerating natural systems

At SRC Group, we’re proud of the role we play in regeneration. We offer restoration schemes within our Planning & Development arm, designed to bring new life to former working quarries. These restored sites create opportunities for future development, reservoirs, agriculture, or wildlife habitats, helping to balance the environmental impact of extraction.

Reusing resources

Finally, the circular economy encourages a shift towards renewable resources. Alongside our recycled aggregates, ECO-BLOC® blocks and low-cement ready mixed concrete, we strive for:

  • Renewable energy: Using solar, wind, or other renewable sources to power operations and buildings.
  • Investment: We’re continually investing in new technologies and materials that reduce reliance on finite resources. We’ve also partnered with CDE Global to supply the advanced processing equipment needed to optimise our operations.

We’re proud to be ISO 14001 accredited, guaranteeing our commitment to environmental management and continuous improvement across all of our operations.

Circular economy in action at SRC Group

We’ve built a unique circular model that transforms waste into valuable products for the construction industry. As part of this, we offer low-carbon and cement-free ready-mixed concrete options, enabling projects to choose eco-friendly options without compromising on quality.

Combined with our recycled aggregate supply, this supports clients in reducing their environmental footprint and aligning with greener building standards.

This approach ensures materials stay in circulation for as long as possible, therefore: reducing waste, saving natural resources, and supporting a more sustainable industry overall.

Why the circular economy construction matters

Adopting the principles of a circular economy isn’t just good for the planet, it offers real, visible benefits for construction businesses too:

  • Reduced material costs through the use of recycled products
  • Lower carbon footprint to meet environmental targets and regulations
  • Increased resilience by reducing dependency on finite raw materials
  • Enhanced reputation with clients seeking sustainable solutions

At SRC Group, we’re committed to helping clients achieve these benefits across every stage of construction; from material supply to waste management and land restoration.

Looking ahead

As we move towards 2030, sustainability will continue to drive innovation within construction. SRC Group is proud to lead the way with a greener, more resource-efficient organisation, powered by a strong circular economy.
