The circular economy for waste management

In the UK, the construction sector is responsible for around 62% of all waste, yet so much still ends up in landfill. At SRC Group, we don’t see waste; we see opportunity. Our circular economy model is built on the following key principles: reduce, reuse, recycle, regenerate.

This means that demolition debris now creates recycled aggregates, ECO‑BLOC® blocks and low-carbon concrete. And with the introduction of SRC Build, we’ve completed the loop and waste has become part of the build itself.

What the circular economy means at SRC

Traditionally, the construction industry has been slow to act in terms of implementing robust recycling processes into the general day-to-day. However, at SRC Group, we’re constantly innovating our waste system, with our in-house recycling centres at the heart of the overall process:

1. Demolition & recovery
   We gather materials such as concrete, hardcore, wood and metal; before taking them to our own recycling centres.
2. In-house processing
   Across our five licensed recycling centres in the South East, we crush, screen, and wash materials into premium recycled aggregates, ECO‑BLOC® blocks, and low-carbon concrete mixes.
3. Land regeneration
   Materials that are unsuitable for reuse via the above methods are utilised to help regenerate unused or derelict spaces. In our first year of putting this into practice, we restored 20 acres of arable land; transforming spoil into farmland or wildlife space.
4. SRC Build
   As the final piece of our circular puzzle, SRC Build uses our own recycled products in construction and refurbishment projects; significantly reducing what needs to go to landfill and proving that these principles work at scale.

Aggregates
We manufacture recycled aggregates following WRAP and Highways 600 standards. These are ideal for road bases, concrete backfill, and general construction use.

ECO‑BLOC® Concrete Blocks
Made with recycled aggregates and cement, ECO‑BLOC® blocks are perfect for walls and floors. They’re strong, insulated, and fully sustainable.

Low-Carbon Concrete
We now offer five low-carbon concrete mixes which provide the strength you expect with a much lower CO₂ footprint.

SRC Build
SRC Build is our very own construction arm, which uses recycled materials on a range of projects; from commercial to military and healthcare to housing. Through SRC Build, we can make sure that the circular economy loop stays closed and clients can reach those all-important sustainability goals.

Environmental impact
Each year, millions of tonnes of waste are diverted from landfill. This reduces pollution, saves natural resources, and cuts CO₂ emissions; helping the UK to meet its sustainability targets. At SRC Group we are proud to have already diverted 30 million tonnes of waste away from landfill sites.

Recycled aggregates are cheaper to produce and move. By avoiding disposal charges and the UK Aggregates Levy, they can deliver real financial benefits too.
