What are Eco‑Bloc® Blocks made from?

When we set out to create ECO-BLOC®, we knew that we wanted something that was more than just a ‘green alternative’; it had to reflect our commitment to the circular economy but also needed to perform. At SRC Group we are proud to manufacture our award-winning ECO-BLOC® Blocks in-house, using materials that are reclaimed, processed and re-used; thereby helping to reduce waste and make construction more sustainable.

In this blog we’ll explore what ECO-BLOC® Blocks are made from, why those materials matter, how we make them and what it means for you when you choose ECO-BLOC® for your project.

What goes into ECO-BLOC®?

Our ECO-BLOC® range is manufactured entirely in-house and available exclusively from SRC. The Blocks meet full UKCA British standards and by choosing them you’ll also help to reduce the need for virgin raw materials.

The Blocks are crafted from:

  • Cement: The binding agent. We use our own in-house cement blends to ensure that only the highest quality materials go into our ECO-BLOC® Blocks.
  • Recycled fine aggregates: These come from construction and demolition waste. They are crushed and processed carefully to remove contamination before being used in ECO-BLOC® to replace some of the traditional virgin sand/fines.
  • Recycled coarse aggregates: Similarly, in the block mix we utilise the crushed and larger screened elements of waste material which replace conventional virgin stone or ballast.

Why these materials matter

Using recycled fine and coarse aggregates alongside cement is not simply a marketing gesture; it addresses several real challenges in modern construction:

Resource depletion: Virgin aggregates (sand, gravel, rock) are finite and increasingly regulated (which results in associated costs). By using recycled materials you can help to reduce the pressure on natural extraction.

Waste diversion: Construction and demolition waste often ends up in landfill. We redirect that waste and turn it into useable materials like ECO-BLOC®.

Carbon savings: Whilst cement remains a high-carbon component, by replacing large proportions of virgin aggregates we can cut the amount of carbon needed to make the block.

Performance: ECO-BLOC® is designed in a way that means you don’t have to compromise on durability or structural capabilities.

How we make ECO-BLOC®

Because we manufacture the Blocks in-house, we streamline the supply chain. This means that you benefit from fewer quality risks and better lead times. We can also be 100% confident with the quality of every block.

Our process:

  • We source waste material from our own recycling facilities, meaning that we know the origin and quality of the recycled fine and coarse aggregates.
  • We use advanced in-house equipment to process these materials; ensuring contaminant levels are kept low, fines are controlled and aggregates adhere to regulatory specifications.
  • The mixing of cement, recycled aggregates and materials is performed under controlled conditions to ensure the perfect consistency and strength.
  • The finished Blocks are tested and certified to UK standards. You can use ECO-BLOC® for load-bearing walls, cavity walls, block & beam floors and above or below ground applications.

Types of ECO-BLOC® and what they can do

We offer different densities and strength classes of ECO-BLOC® to match a range of construction requirements:

  • Solid Dense ECO-BLOC®: Available in 3.6N, 7.3N and 10.4N strength classes and 100mm and 140mm sizes. These are suitable for load bearing walls, cavity walls and thermal and sound insulation.
  • Medium Dense ECO-BLOC®: Also available in 3.6N and 7.3N classes but with specialist lightweight aggregates. This reduces weight and makes it easier for manual handling whilst still delivering strength for block and beam floors as well as above or below ground use.

Awards and recognition

Earlier this year ECO-BLOC® earned SRC Group a Bronze award in the Product of the Year category at the Global Good Awards. These awards celebrate sustainable products making a positive impact and we were honoured and thrilled to be recognised.

This award acknowledged months of hard work from our dedicated teams and underpinned our overall mission. We’re not just producing another concrete block, we’re redefining how construction materials are created and that real, sustainable changes can be made.

ECO-BLOC® in practice

When you choose ECO-BLOC® for your project, you are choosing Blocks that are:

  • Industry-recognised and award-winning
  • Made from materials that would have otherwise gone to waste
  • Manufactured in one place for end-to-end consistency and quality
  • Approved for a wide range of structural applications
  • Part of a circular economy model that reduces reliance on virgin extraction

Sustaining the circular economy in construction

ECO-BLOC® is one piece of our broader circular economy offering. At SRC Group we also supply recycled aggregateslow-carbon ready-mix concrete and deliver construction services via our SRC Build arm. This is a true circular economy in practice and means that waste can be transformed into materials and those materials back into new buildings. The result is: fewer materials are taken from nature, fewer lorry miles are made and fewer tonnes of waste are destined for landfill.

Choosing the right materials for your build

If you’re planning your next project here’s what to look for and how ECO-BLOC® can help:

  • Structural application: ECO-BLOC® is industry-certified and available in different densities and strength classes. From residential homes to industrial warehouses, ECO-BLOC® has been designed for versatility, including above and below ground applications as well as floor systems and walls.
  • Sustainability credentials: If you’re seeking materials with a reduced environmental impact, our recycled aggregate base give ECO-BLOC® that edge.
  • Supply and lead times: Because we manufacture in-house, we can offer a seamless supply chain.

At SRC Group we believe that the future of construction lies in smart reuse; we take what others see as waste and turn it into value. ECO-BLOC® Blocks embody that belief and are designed for real-world construction use.
